FUN FACTS

Puh’Tok is a Blackfoot Indian word that means “in the pines”.

When Camp Puh’Tok first opened in 1941, it cost $6.00 per camper for a week’s stay.

3,000 years ago woodland Indians living in this area collected soapstone to use in making pipe bowls and water vessels. In 1992, a prehistoric soapstone bowl was found in the Memorial Glen, and two more were found when the Thunderbird Lodge was later renovated.

The roof supports of the Thunderbird Lodge are made of salvaged Nicaraguan mahogany timber, which was plucked from the waters of the Baltimore Harbor by a tugboat cabin.

Girls first camp to Puh’Tok as resident campers in 1985.

The 40 foot totem pole overlooking the swimming pool was carved in the Inner Harbor by three Gitskan Indians from British Columbia.

The large herd of whitetail deer that reside in the area surrounding the camp are descendants of 17 deer brought by wildlife rangers from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in the 1950’s.

The rare and endangered bog turtle lives in the low lying, moist areas of the Camp property.

More than 40,000 campers have spent their summers at Puh’Tok in the past 50+ years!
